Pitbull Breeds & Types of Pitbulls – A List of Every Pitbull

Pitbull breeds are a hybrid of terriers and bulldogs. There are many ways to categorize this dog breed. More than what you can imagine. The name “Pit Bull” accommodates many types of pedigree dog breeds. Making it difficult for you (and most people) to identify.

Here is an article about the Pitbull breeds & types of Pitbulls. It also contains a list of every Pitbull, their types, appearances, and characteristic. Naturally, this is going to be one hell of an article. So let’s begin.

Pitbull Breed – Introduction

To name a few formal Pitbull dog breeds. Most people pay for the American Pit Bull Terrier or Staffordshire Bull Terrier. And also a hybrid of the two – American Staffordshire Terrier.

It can get confusing to know or identify which is which. I know. That’s why I’m here to help you sort out the mess. By their appearance, these Pitbulls go by the same name. You won’t find such acute cataloging of Pitbulls in any foster care or shelter.

So what are Pitbulls like? I’m sure you’ve seen one in movies as police or search and rescue dogs. They’re good hunters, drivers of livestock, and generation family dogs. Their fierceness, agility, and vigor put them on the map.

Now, there’s a persistent stigma around Pitbulls. Because they’re such a strong dog breed and to some, they may even look dangerous or violent. Their owners can misrepresent Pitbulls as a good breed. Trained to appear violent in violent or illegitimate acts. It’s true that some insurance companies don’t even offer liability for Pitbull injuries.

Pitbull Breed – History

I’d like to take you back a bit. It’s well-known by now that a Pitbull is a hybrid dog breed. By crossbreeding two of the most popular dog breeds. A Bulldog who is popular for its strength and a Terrier for its speed and bravery.

The origin of this crossbreed can be traced back to the United Kingdom. Where Pitbulls were trained and used for blood sports. The government made this practice illegal soon after. However, the dog-fighting industry prospered for quite a while even after it.

This trend became a decade-long tradition in many British and American groups. Though it was always a closed-ground kind of industry. Until the word got out and it was put to an explicit stop.

Pitbulls are ferocious dogs, especially when you train them to be. They’re excellent companions as you care for them. A Pitbull can develop a strong bond with her caretaker. Also making one a good choice as police dogs and search and rescue dogs.

But this is on the side of the law, right? What about the other side? Well, some owners use Pitbulls to guard illegal businesses. For narcotics safekeeping or as attack dogs against the police or enemies.

In 1996, however, to strip away the stigma of Pitbulls as angry and violent dogs. The name of Pitbulls was switched to “St. Francis Terriers.” Different kennel clubs recognize different types of dogs as Pitbulls.

Canada officially recognizes 4 types of Pitbulls. The Bull-Terrier, Miniature Bull-Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull-Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier. America too recognizes these types of dog breeds as Pitbulls.

Pitbull Breed – Characteristics

What do Pitbulls look like?

You can identify a Pitbull easily. But it’s also true that visually identifying most Pitbulls isn’t easy. There are just so many of them! But there are some common characteristics.

Such as the square-shaped face, big body type, and medium height. But again, it’s difficult to be sure of a Pitbull when you see one. They are often confused with other dog breeds such as a Corso or a Dogue De Bordeaux.

Though these similar dog breeds aren’t hybrid. They’re purebreds with no trace of Bulldogs or Terriers. It’s easy to mistake them as Pitbulls.

Pitbulls have powerful jaws. Muscular body type, medium but significant size, and a thin pointy tail. Keeping your Pitbull’s coat cropped short is essential. If not, then their hair grows long and curly which looks dirty and messed up.

A Pitbull’s weight and height match up to par. Between a male and female Pitbull, this is what you need to know.

A male Pitbull weighs between 14 to 36 kgs and their height is around 45 to 50 cm. A female Pitbull weighs 14 to 36 kgs and their height is 45 cms. The mortality rate of both genders is the same which is between 8 to 15 years old.

Pitbull Breed – Personality

Like I mentioned before, Pitbulls are energetic creatures. And if taken care of responsibly and lovingly, they are perfect companions. You will immediately find that your Pitbull cares more for you than you think. Some may even become reliant on you for their entertainment.

They count on you for affection, behave so as to please and satisfy you, and are loyal. It’s critical to train a Pitbull from the time of puppyhood. They can socialize, are intelligent, and very, very courageous. They can do more than keep your home safe. They’re excitable to be around!

What I’d like to talk about is their general temperament. Now by that, I mean, their supposed aggressiveness.

It’s natural to assume that your Pitbull is angry by her instinctual nature. But that is not so. It all depends upon your training technique and upbringing. Pitbulls are strong and focused dogs. They’re not angry but they can be defensive. It’s the Bulldog’s power and a Terrier’s gameness.

This demands a new approach to training a Pitbull. And if you think that’s entering new territory for you. That you can’t handle it or don’t think yourself fit or confident to do so. You can always consult or hire a professional dog trainer.

I can’t stress this fact enough. You can’t bring up a Pitbull the way you would a more homely dog breed. They’re fierce, have a will of their own, and need proper direction. If you lack such sensitivity during or after training. It could lead to behavioral issues or injuries, in general.

Pitbull Breed – Allergies

One of the most common health problems in Pitbulls is an allergy. They could develop skin, respiratory, food and/or flea allergies. Is she licking or scratching her paws? Is she scratching her face or rubbing it against furniture or walls? This calls for a simple allergy test.

It’s not enough to assume your Pitbull has an allergy. You need to determine what type of allergy she has and how the vet can treat it. Though skin allergies are the most common type among Pitbulls. They can be caused by a bunch of other factors. Such as:

Skin sensitivity to particles in the air

These particles can be dust, dust mites, molds, or any other dirt particle. This could easily lead to a skin allergy. The kind that causes hypersensitivity, atopic dermatitis, or skin rashes. While these are severe signs of a skin allergy. She could be hypersensitive to the sun during the summer season.

Common areas where the redness of skin, itchiness or rashes originate. They are the paws, rear legs, and the abdomen region. A rather uncommon but highly-affected region could also be the ears. If the skin appears red or inflamed or could feel hot when you touch it.

Anywhere there’s exposure of skin. Like between the toes, armpits, around the hind legs, or the groin. These are also sensitive areas where skin allergies are common. If you notice the skin color reddening or looking extra pink than normal. It could indicate atopic dermatitis which is a severe skin condition.

Lung sensitivity to particles in the air

There’s skin sensitivity and there are inhalation allergies. The same dust, mites, pollen, molds, and other particles can enter your dog’s system. Though the ears, eyes, and mouth.

A condition called “Cherry Eye” is the result of such allergies. When your Pitbull inhales all these chemicals and develops a sensitivity of it. Having said that, “Cherry Eye” is more prominent among Pitbull puppies. Or Pitbulls with weak immunity and skin allergies.

If your dog scratches her groin region, abdomen, or armpits. You may not see or notice any sensitivity outside. But the itchiness and inflammation may be originating internally.

Allergic to chemicals in pet products

A Pitbull is also likely to be allergic to chemicals in pet products. Products that generally come into contact with your Pitbull on a regular basis. If the Pitbull has a flea problem, it could be the flea collar. The dog shampoo, leash or harness, or even the water.

Other non-pet products can be certain types of plants, wood, furniture, or upholstery. The chemicals in these could have an allergen-like reaction. The best thing to do is to get your dog to a vet for a quick and effective consult.

Allergic to certain types of food

Lastly, this causes a running nose, skin and ear itchiness or redness. Your Pitbull will also lick her paws or bite the skin in between the nails. Stuff like rubbing her face on the carpet, sneezing, coughing, or smelly ears. All these factors are signs of a food allergy.

A Pitbull may be sensitive to foods that, on a large scale, may affect humans too. Such as soy, sugar, artificial preservatives, dairy, meat, whey, and flavorings. I know! This sounds like a list of ingredients you’d commonly find in commercial foods.

So before you plan to feed your dog such ingredients. It’s best to get an allergic check-up done. To prevent symptoms and maintain a healthy diet plan for the Pitbull.

Allergic to fleas/ticks

It’s one thing to have ticks or fleas on the body. It’s another for a dog to be allergic to it. Flea allergy in Pitbulls is seriously common. And in the most absurd manner too. Fleas don’t cause irritation in Pitbull though their ticking or biting. But their saliva.

A vet can determine a flea infestation in minutes. So there’s no need for you to delay the check-up. And get a tick-allergy test to check for any fleas on your Pitbull.

The common solutions for a flea allergy are as follows. A dry shampoo routine, capsules or sprays, and, in worst cases, medication.

Always remember. One thing always leads to another. It’s important to stay one step ahead of allergy prevention in Pitbulls if you can help it. So get on the wagon as soon as you bring your pup home!

Lack of attention and irresponsibility can affect your dog’s behavior and life!

Pitbull Breed – Types of Pitbull

You’ve always known there was more than one Pitbull type. But you just don’t know what they look like, right? Well, this should help sort it out. The ones there is some information on, I’ve mentioned in striking detail and honesty.

American Pit Bull Terrier

An American Pit Bull Terrier is the original Pitbull breed all across the world. A result of crossbreeding an English Bulldog and American Terrier. These dogs weigh up to 30kgs and can grow as tall as 21 inches.

These purebred dogs were the official fighters. Meaning they were put first as dogfighters. They’re taller than other types of Pitbulls such as Staffordshire. They’re further classified into Rednose and Bluenose Pitbulls.

By nature, American Pit Bull Terriers are friendly, docile, and strong. They have a sharp focus and need rigorous training and discipline. Encourage Pitbulls to socialize with other dogs during puppyhood. And have them participate in dog training courses to cap their aggression/defensiveness.

Rednose Pitbulls

Rednose Pitbulls are rare but special. They have a red nose and a copper-red coat. The origin of this type of Pitbull is unknown. Some reports say that Irish Pit Bulls had red-colored noses when they were brought to the US. But nobody can say that for certain if that’s the origin.

Rednose Pitbulls cater to a similar lifestyle. They need essential vitamins and minerals to keep their coat shiny and healthy. In kennels or animal shelters, they’re more expensive than bluenosed as they’re a rare find!

Bluenose Pitbulls

If you see a Pitbull with a blue nose and a bluish coat, that’s a Bluenose Pitbull. This complete guide by DogAcademy takes an in-depth look at this rare breed type.. Though rare, Bluenose Pitbulls are loving and admired. They are no different than Rednose Pitbulls as they’re as companionable and fit.

American Staffordshire Terriers

After American Pitbulls, American Staffordshire Terriers are common. They are also commonly known as working dogs in most households. Being a hybrid from a long history of all-working dogs. Including Bulldogs and Terriers. This type of Pitbull is easy to place.

They weigh between 30 to 45kgs. And can grow as tall as 17 to 19 inches. The reason they’re categorized as working dogs is because of two main reasons. First, they have a taller and more muscular build. Second, they’re more instinctually inclined towards physical activities.

So stern training is essential for American Staffordshire Terriers. It’s a good thing that this type of Pitbull breed aren’t as defensive. So they’re easier to train and keep at homely pets.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

If you want a more lightweight Pitbull dog breed. Then you’d have to look into a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Originating from English coal miners. These working dogs can take on miniature but speedy tasks.

An average Staffordshire Bull Terrier weighs up to 12 to 18kgs only. And they grow as tall as 12 to 16 inches. A comfortable weight, muscular body, and light structure. These are the ideal characteristics of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

American Bully

The name certainly sounds new and intimidating. The American Bully is crossbred of English Bulldogs and American Pit Bull Terriers. So they inherit the gameness and aggressiveness of a Terrier. And the friendliness and loyal temperament of a Bulldog.

American Bullies look and feel strong. They’re not very tall nor are they very light. Their muscular body bodes well with their height which is not more than 20 inches. And not less than 16 inches.

Believe it or not, this is a very famous type of Pitbull breed on the market today. And so, they come in varieties ranging from pocket to XL breed. Here’s a basic introduction to each of them.

Pocket American Bully

A Pocket American Bully is exactly as its name suggests. Though not as miniature as a pocket’s size. This type of Pitbull breed is the shortest in height among all of the others. They’re more compact, light, and adorable.

In terms of weight distribution, their heads are much heavier. With high but cropped ears, almost or oval eyes, and a broad abdomen. If you’re looking for a docile and small Pitbull breed. Go for a Pocket Bully.

Classic American Bully

A Classic Bully comes close to an American Bully in many ways. They have a broad muscular structure but light bodyweight. The muscles and bones weight takes up most of the dog’s overall body weight. You know what this means, don’t you? They have a lighter body mass but a stealthy structure.

You can expect a Classic Bully to have a calm temperament. They’re sharp, focused, strong, and sociable creatures. You can rely on them for their loyalty, discipline, and protectiveness.

Standard American Bully

A Standard Bully shares the characteristic of a Bulldog. Though it has the physical attributes of a Pocket Bully. With a heavy head, muscular but compact body. They’re larger than Pocket Bullies and with more stamina.

But their temperament is calm, affectionate, and loyal. They’re easier to train, sociable, and less defensive around strangers or children. So training them to remain calm, towards family members and others, is quite easy. And it depends upon your training as a responsible parent.

Extreme American Bully

An Extreme Bully has a heavy body and thick, muscular structure. They’re most defining aspect is thick-set bones which contribute to their body weight.

Unique distinctions, however, are plenty. Extreme bullies have thin and loose lips. Their faces are wrinkly and a bit wide. And there’s a difference in height between a male and a female American Extreme Bully. A male grows up to 20 inches while a female up to 19 inches.

XL American Bully

Being the biggest and heaviest of all American Bullies. They’re bulkier and have a mortality rate of 12 years. Their coat is stiff, shiny, and always cropped. But don’t mistake their size for their temperament. They’re super friendly, sociable, and loyal dogs.

XL American Bullies are easer to train. They could seem intimidating to others, especially to children. But once they get to know them. It’s a whole different story.

Rottweiler Pitbull

Though not purebred, a Rottweiler Pitbull is a hybrid of a Rottweiler and Pitbull. They’re sociable, warm, and friendly. By appearance, they look intimidating and dangerous. But by nature, they’re the complete opposite.

But this doesn’t mean Rottweiler Pitbulls don’t need training. Even more so because they’re crossbred from Rottweilers. These are confident dogs with Rottweiler’s hunting traits. So keeping them calm and vigilant is critical.

Pitbull Husky Mix

Another hybrid and crossbred between a Siberian Husky and Pitbull. A Pitbull Husky Mix can also be the result of an Alaskan Husky and Pitbull. Either way, they’re intelligent and playful dogs.

You can domesticate a Pitbull Husky for generations. They’re affectionate, strong, and adaptable. However, they need constant attention and entertainment. If not, then they could develop certain behavioral issues. Such as chowing down on stuff due to boredom. Aggression, excessive howling or barking, etc.

What is the Cost of Purchasing a Pitbull?

As you know by now, there are many prices of a Pitbull. Because there are so many types of Pitbulls on the market. So it’s not embarrassing to don’t know which one to get. And what to expect in terms of cost.

There are different kinds of factors that influence the cost of a Pitbull. Here are some of the most critical ones. Keeping these factors into consideration. The average price of a Pitbull, though hard to say accurately, is around $200 to $1000.

Documentation

Adopting a Pitbull puppy with papers will cost you more money. The reason behind this is that a Pitbull puppy comes from a line of purebred dogs. So to get the specific details of her lineage and parents is not an inexpensive retreat.

Why do you need your pup’s papers? Well, if you plan on participating in dog events, training courses, and competitions. You need to have legal documentation in hand.

Gender/Characteristics

Do you want a male or a female Pitbull? Female Pitbull puppies are more expensive than male puppies. Have you guessed why? Well, a female puppy can produce a litter. So the overall value of the Pitbull increases tenfold.

However, there’s a catch. If you buy a male Pitbull puppy with a heavier build and rich champion parents. Then a male puppy would be way more expensive than a female puppy. So in some animal shelters, quality beats quantity with regards to price.

Sharper intelligence, strength, good looks, and other physical attributes. All these factors can also influence the price of a Pitbull.

Where Can I Purchase a Pitbull from?

There are two places where a Pitbull can be taken home. You can also adopt a Pitbull if someone you know has a female Pitbull with a litter. Or else, you can pick from the following choices.

Adopting a Pitbull

If there’s a local animal shelter around. You could always have a look at it. Adopting a Pitbull puppy is a good thing for many reasons. For one, it’s cheaper. And it just means you’re helping a stray puppy get a new home.

If you just want a new puppy with no necessity of paperwork. Adopting a Pitbull is the safest and most rewarding option.

Dog Breeders

Buying a Pitbull from a dog breeder will cost you more money. But this also gives you some flexibility in terms of customization. You can opt for your choice of a Pitbull. If you don’t mind paying a high price for it.

The price range for a Pitbull, in this case, would be around $800. Some are even more expensive if you want rich and good personality genes. Watch out for breeders known as “backyard breeders.”

These types of breeders crossbreed different variations of Pitbulls. So it’s not totally ethical and even if it is, you wouldn’t know all about it. Such breeders sell the most good-looking Pitbull for a higher price.

Such as Rednose Pitbulls or Bluenose Pitbulls that are harder to find. However, you shouldn’t rely on such breeders. They can make false claims which sooner or later turns up faulty. Your Pitbull, as a result of tricky crossbreeding, may develop health problems.

Do your own thorough research before settling on a dog breeder. Look for reviews, word-of-mouth reviews, and other factors. Who are your pup’s parents? Do they live in the same animal shelter? Does your dog breeder have pets of their own?

A Pitbull with a rich bloodline can be as expensive as $10000. Some even higher as it depends on what you’re looking for. But the lowest a Pitbull can cost is $800. Unless you choose to adopt which costs only $100 to $250.

Debunking Myths About Pitbulls

With so many Pitbulls on the market. It’s only natural to fall prey to certain false claims. Allow me to clear up the most significant myth about a Pitbull dog breed.

Most dog bites are of Pitbulls. They’re a dangerous dog breed.

It’s true that Pitbulls bite. But technically, this fact is false. A Pitbull will bite another individual only when provoked. Or if the Pitbull has some psychological imbalance. Due to improper treatment at home, an abusive pet owner, etc.

This does not indicate that Pitbulls are violent and dangerous dogs. It only indicates that discipline training is needed. And you should not engage in dogfighting rituals.

In fact, Pitbulls come close to sharing the personality of Retrievers. They’re friendly, sociable, affectionate, and loyal. So there’s no reason for you believe that having a Pitbull is scary. It won’t scare your kids or other people. Not unless you decide to not train your Pitbull. Or bring her up in a loving and caring environment.

This also contributes to the fact that Pitbulls have a locked jaw. Yes, it’s true that a Pitbull’s bite is deep and strong. And when they do bite, they have a locked jaw. So it’s difficult to break which worsens the bite.

The underlying cause of a Pitbull bite is aggression. But this is not innate aggression. It’s caused by external factors. Such as mistreatment, abuse, lack of nourishment, and no training.

There are many ways to determine the aggression of your Pitbull. They dock their trails, prick up their ears, growl, dig, howl, etc. So there is no assumption to be made about Pitbulls being dangerous and responsible for most dog attacks.

Even a Siberian Husky who can look adorable can bite an adult as violently as a Pitbull. So the point in question is the dog’s emotional response and upbringing. Rather than their intrinsic personality and breeding responsible for dog biting.

Conclusion

Now you know everything there is to know about Pitbulls. The Pitbull breeds & types of Pitbulls – a list of every pitbull. Pitbulls are incredible and friendly creatures. They love you back. Care for you, protect you, and can rely on you for their satisfaction.

You can adopt a Pitbull puppy. Buy one from a kennel or animal shelter or a dog breeder. This not only affects the cost of the Pitbull. But also their appearance and type of Pitbull you want.

Their strength, friendliness, and high response puts them on the map. If you’d like to bring home a rugged-looking dog of medium size. You can pick up a Pitbull from your nearest dog shelter. What are you waiting for?
