How to Tell If a Dog is Happy
There are many things that can make your dog happy, from playing fetch and going for walks/jogs/dinner with you to engaging in physical play sessions and sharing meals together. But how do you know whether your pup truly enjoys these experiences?
Happy dogs tend to display relaxed body postures with soft eyes and wagging tails; they may even lick your face or lips from time to time!
Ears
Ears can be used as an indicator of a dog’s mood. Floppy, relaxed ears that hang freely against the sides of their head rather than being pinched flat against their skull are an indicator that your pup is feeling contented; soft eyes and body movement often indicate happiness as do wide open mouths with tongue hanging out like an “open smile”.
Stressed dogs’ ears will typically pin back, while other signs indicate fear or tension, such as yawning or lip-licking; turning away from you; keeping their tail low or tucked between their legs; or crouching down while avoiding eye contact; posturing themselves awkwardly in an uncomfortable posture.
Dogs are highly individual creatures whose mood can shift drastically throughout the day, but if they display these behaviors frequently it’s likely they are feeling happy. It is also important to keep in mind that just because a tail wag occurs doesn’t automatically indicate they’re content; in fact, slow or low tail wags could indicate stress or nervousness in some instances.

A healthy canine should get excited over things such as dinner time, walks with their humans or other family members, playtime and other favorite activities. If your pup seems less interested in their favorite activities or sleeping more than usual, it could be a telltale sign they’re feeling uncomfortable and unhappy.
Dogs that lie belly up and show their tongue are showing extreme happiness, eager to play with you. More likely to do this if their gaze and ears are relaxed while wide eyes that display whites may indicate fearfulness.
Dogs that display open mouth panting signals they are thirsty but not necessarily happy, since this behavior is used as a method for cooling off or as an indication that they’re anxious. A wrinkled forehead or furrowed eyebrow are other telltale signs that your canine is feeling unease or fearful of something or someone.
Happy dogs typically bark only occasionally and when they do so, their barks tend to be higher pitched and shorter in duration. Dogs who bark frequently but for extended periods should likely not be happy and should visit a veterinarian to ensure they remain healthy. Any sudden change in appetite could also indicate discomfort; be sure to see your vet immediately for these symptoms!
Eyes
Eye contact between humans and dogs is often seen as a sign of trust and happiness in both cases. From gazing lovingly at you while cuddling on the sofa to greeting you at the door with puppy eyes when entering, your pup simply wants to be around you because he or she knows you are their human companion.
Eye shape can provide another indicator of emotional wellbeing in dogs. A dog that is relaxed and content will have open, soft eyes without tension or stress; they’ll likely also blink frequently. Wide, upturned eyes indicate curiosity or alertness while narrowed ones could indicate aggression or fear.
Wagging tails and soft body postures are telltale signs of happiness for dogs. Their tail will rest low and relaxed, with ears flattened toward something interesting; mouth will also be free of tension; in fact, when dogs are happy and curious enough they may even lick their lips or wag their tail!
An average, healthy dog sleeps 12-14 hours daily and should feel content. If their sleeping pattern begins to shift or they seem lethargic when awakening, this should be investigated further as this could indicate distress and require further investigation. Also important to keep an eye out for is when their appetite decreases as this could indicate illness or depression.
Tail
When your dog is content and happy, their tail should be held in an upward or neutral position. If their tail lies flat against their back or is tucked under their body instead, this could indicate fear or submission from your canine friend.
An animal’s eyes can provide a reliable indicator of happiness. Soft eyes with corners turned up indicate they’re feeling content; wide, hard gazed eyes might indicate they’re worried or scared.
A dog who is content or excited will often wag his or her entire body; this may include wiggles and jumps. The direction of their wag may provide valuable clues as to their emotions – a slow, straight wag may indicate happiness while an irregular, rapid one may indicate frustration or anger.
Another way to judge whether or not a dog is happy is their appetite. A healthy appetite indicates physical wellbeing as well as emotional well-being; any changes to or reduction of eating could indicate discontentment or illness in their life.
Your best bet for keeping your pup content and healthy is to ensure they receive everything they require to flourish – including nutritious food, regular exercise and lots of love and affection! Body

Your dog may show happiness if they bark in an intermittent high-pitched tone for short bursts, often to get attention or play with. But long-term low-pitched barking may indicate something amiss; such incidents could indicate worry or upset over something specific.
An indication of how content your dog is is when they sleep peacefully with you or snuggle against you on the sofa, with their head against your shoulder or curled on the couch. Conversely, pacing around aimlessly can be a telltale sign they’re feeling under par and seem disinterested in engaging in any of their usual activities – this could be an early indicator that something’s amiss in their wellbeing.
