How to Get Your Dog Erect
Dog peniss are usually concealed beneath their sheath known as the prepuce; however, during sexual stimulation or excitement the bulbus glandis expands creating two easily noticeable bumps which become visible to owners and other animal lovers alike.
Occasional erect penises in intact dogs or neutered males engaging in masturbation behavior is normal, but if your pup’s penis remains raised and cannot be retracted back into its sheath, take your pup immediately to a veterinarian for evaluation.
1. Petting
Petting is usually the culprit when it comes to giving your dog an erection. This includes belly rubs and rolling over for playtime – while this may cause their genitals to poke through, it should usually not cause concern.
Your dog will become aroused when excited or nervous, such as before entering a walk/training class/play session at the dog park/hearing the jingle of his leash. While his penis may become visible during these times of excitement, once his excitement subsides it should return into its sheath and retract back inside its sheath.
Some dogs may mount other animals or people for nonsexual reasons, such as to assert dominance or social status. Puppies frequently mount and hump each other as they learn how to behave around other dogs; this behavior is considered normal and helps puppies discover their strength and social standing. Some dogs may even masturbate by mounting and licking themselves or other objects such as hands or beds; such behavior should never be considered sexual in any form.
Male dogs who exhibit periods of erectness may find that their bulbus gland becomes discolored or dry during an episode of erection, and should immediately consult a vet as this could restrict blood flow to exposed tissue, potentially leading to engorgement, lack of lubrication and possibly permanent damage of their penis.
An unusually large or protruding dog penis should never be accepted as normal behavior by pet parents, and requires an examination from a vet in order to ascertain its cause, which could range from embedded hair in the sheath, neurological issues or prostate disease. 2. Playing
Although mounting and humping are sexual behaviors, a dog’s penis may become erect due to other activities as well. Mounting can include mounting other dogs, people or objects like toys, wadded-up blankets or their own bedding when aroused and excited; undersocialized or poorly socialized dogs often mount people and animals excessively when overexcited; puppies typically discover their strength through nonsexual play humping of littermates, other dogs and even inanimate objects like toys or chewies.
Dog’s penises may become arched as a response to an exciting walk, training session or nonsexual activity such as playing with you or hearing the jingle of his walking lead. Although an erection doesn’t always signal sexual arousal, it may occur if he becomes excited during training and rolls onto his back for belly rubs!
Male dogs will sometimes display their penis with excitement when trying to penetrate a female dog’s vagina, and remain erect as it exits after penetration.
If a male dog’s penis becomes consistently erect, this could be a telltale sign that there may be undiagnosed sexual health issues such as bacteria or herpesvirus present that requires treatment by a veterinarian. Should these erections persist it is recommended they visit their vet for evaluation and possible therapy – otherwise veterinarians are highly recommended as potential resources for evaluation and management of such conditions. Veterinarians may recommend applying lubrication to the sheath in order to alleviate irritation and friction that causes the penis to protrude. You can make your own lubricant by mixing equal parts white sugar and water together into a paste and liberally spreading it on the penis. Sugar acts as a hyperosmotic, drawing out fluid from tissues to reduce swelling and shrink the sheath. If this doesn’t work, try wrapping your penis in a light towel and applying pressure for several minutes; additionally sterile lubricants can often be purchased from pet stores.
3. Exercise
If your dog occasionally mounts people without disrupting you or others, using preventive training could be the key. Teach him another behavior like sitting when you notice him preparing to mount and reward it as soon as he does it – this will channel their energy away from mounting people or dogs and into something productive instead.
If your pet’s penis has become elevated too frequently or for an extended period, consult with their veterinarian immediately. An inflamed prepuce could be due to infections, injuries or even tumors and should be evaluated carefully by medical professionals as soon as possible.
As with humans, when aroused and excited, dog penises also become arched up, just like human ones do. A swollen prepuce should usually return to its regular size within an hour if it does not cause discomfort or other distressing symptoms.
Some dogs show romantic-appearing behaviors before mounting, such as panting, whining, licking and rubbing. You can distract your dog from mounting by pushing him off, turning away or telling him to sit in another location where they cannot mount. Teaching him to sit on command might also help divert his focus elsewhere.
Home remedies for an enlarged dog penis may include mixing plain white sugar and water into a mixture and applying it liberally to the affected area. Sugar acts as a hyperosmotic agent by drawing out fluid from tissues to reduce swelling; or you could wrap a package of frozen peas in a light towel and apply for five minutes to the area where there’s swelling.
4. Training
Mounting and humping behaviors performed by dogs serve several purposes, from sexual to social dominance. Some mounting and humping can be sexually driven while it can also be used by dogs to display social standing or dominance over others. Their genitals are normally enclosed by their prepuce so only part of an erect penis shows when mounting or humping; sometimes this behavior may include flirtatious-appearing behavior like whining, licking, bows, etc. It may also help remove saliva from an object to help remove smelly spots resulting from mounting.
Sometimes your dog’s penis may become erect for no obvious reason, which is most commonly observed during breeding season. As long as this erection lasts no more than 24 hours and your pup seems otherwise healthy, swollen penis shouldn’t necessarily be cause for alarm – however if he experiences any other discomfort due to it or it becomes painful contact your vet immediately for advice.
Most dog penises result from sexually motivated mounting or masturbation; however, it’s not unusual for dogs to show their private parts during non-sexual arousal as well. A dog may exhibit this behavior while getting his belly rubbed, or when hearing his walking lead jingle. When your pup becomes aroused for non-sexual reasons, try distracting him using obedience commands; try teaching him sit on cue and tell him “Leave It,” when mounting someone or something – praise enthusiastically and give a treat afterwards as often as needed to stop mounting people or other dogs alike!
Swollen penis in dogs could also be due to paraphimosis, in which their erect penis cannot retract into the preputial sheath. If this occurs, take immediate steps with your vet as constricted pens can rapidly lead to an enlarged prepuce, infection and possibly even tissue death. Your vet may prescribe anti-inflammatories or sedatives for pain management; additionally, draining of the sheath may be recommended to relieve pressure in this instance.
