How to Teach a Dog to Lay Down
Teaching your dog to lie down can be an invaluable skill in many circumstances. Not only can it help control them when they become excited or distressed, but it can also strengthen your relationship with them and foster greater understanding between you both.
Begin by tempting your pup into the down position with a tasty treat, and rewarding him when they follow it down.
Start by luring your dog into the down position.
If your dog doesn’t know the “Down” command yet, try coaxing him into position with treats. Start by holding your hand right in front of his nose and slowly moving it down toward the floor until his elbows and rear end touch it, at which time say “Down” with a click or treat and reward him accordingly. Repeat this process several times daily until eventually your pup can lie down without needing coaxing from you!
Once your dog understands the “down” command, try not to reward it with treats every time it follows your hand into a down position – as doing this may make him dependent on food in your hand! After three instances where he follows an empty hand into this position successfully, move onto step two.
Once your dog has learned how to lie down on verbal command, gradually lower his clicker usage and provide less training treats. Continue practicing in different environments with increasing levels of distraction as he becomes more comfortable.
Once your dog has learned to lie down in an isolated environment, use the same techniques to teach him to relax on command outside. Start practicing during television ad breaks before moving onto more distracting environments like backyard or local park. If your pup becomes nervous in new environments, try offering him his favorite toy as a distraction instead of treats – this may help overcome anxiety or stress that prevent him from relaxing on command.
Give him a treat.
Though it can be tempting to dive headlong into teaching your dog advanced tricks, a good place to start is by teaching basic obedience behaviors such as lying down. This behavior will come in handy in various scenarios from helping calm guests when they arrive to keeping your pup from wandering into the kitchen and tripping over your feet while cooking!
Begin by coaxing your dog into the down position using a treat. Place the treat near their nose so they can smell it but not grab it; gradually lower it onto the ground while your dog follows along and follows it with their body; when elbows and rear end touch ground, give them their reward and praise them!
Once they’ve learned to follow a treat into the down position, progress to using both verbal cues and hand signals as means to recalling it from their hands. By practicing each separately, your pup should understand that each one means the same behavior.
Training sessions should be kept short as dogs tend to lose interest after about 20 minutes. Don’t punish your pup if he or she refuses to lie down at first; forcing your pet can make them uncomfortable and hurt them in the process. Instead, wait for your pup to lie down before rewarding and praising him or her immediately upon doing so; this will teach your dog that lying down leads to positive reinforcement while associating the command with positive emotions. Once they consistently comply, then you can introduce more distracting environments as part of training!

Once your dog begins consistently following your empty hand into a down position, praise and feed him two treats as rewards for doing what you expect of him. This will help him associate the down command with specific locations and increase its likelihood that he responds when it’s time to lie down. After several more training sessions have passed, gradually phase out treats until eventually your goal of having your pup respond to your down command without rewards becomes achievable – although continuing praising him every time he lies down is always wise so they know they are meeting expectations!
Once he’s showing you a down motion without an accompanying treat in his hand, move onto step four. Choose a mat or bed where he’ll lie down; ensure it’s comfortable for him while being easy to keep clean; having portable bed allows you to train him in different rooms of the house as well as taking it with you when going for walks.
Place your dog on a mat and give him the place command. He should immediately lie down for you to praise and treat; if he attempts to stand back up again, repeat both processes until he finally lies down without having to be lured. As soon as he learns to lie down on his own without your assistance, you can gradually increase how long he stays there; eventually you will want him lying there even without you in the room or when someone comes knocking at the door!
