Why You Should Hire a Professional Groomer for Your Furry Friend

Regardless of whether you own a dog or cat, regular grooming is necessary for all kinds of pets. Not only does it keep the pet’s fur and skin clean and healthy, it also enables a professional groomer to do a fast health check and ensure that your pet is in great condition.

There are numerous benefits of hiring a professional groomer for regular grooming. Aside from ensuring healthy growth of and aerating the coat, grooming helps promote blood circulation and keep grease levels down, which prevent sebaceous cysts that are due to blocked skin pores.

Remember that pets like cats and dogs may shed faster that other animals, which may cause loose hair to be matted. If not brushed regularly, they may become dense wads that could drag the skin down, which result in soreness and some skin issues. So, make sure to hire trustworthy professional groomers from Barkwash and Treat Shoppe and other reputable grooming salons and experience the difference of quality grooming services.

Below are the other reasons why you must hire a professional groomer for your furry friend:

  • Hassle-Free Grooming Experience

Grooming pets without the help of professionals can be a challenging task. Oftentimes, pets don’t like grooming and tend to show signs of anger, fear, stress, and aggression to their owners. For this reason, a lot of people find themselves prolonging the grooming session.

Once you hire a professional groomer, you’ll enjoy a hassle-free grooming experience for your pet, while allowing you to do other important activities.

  • Trouble-Free Nail Cutting

Pet owners often struggle when cutting their pet’s nails. Due to this, some pet owners end up hurting their pets because of improper nail clipping. As a pet owner, you must know that there are parts of your pet’s nails that are sensitive and can’t be cut.

One of the reasons why you should hire professional groomers is that they know how and where to cut the claws. Your pets would love your preferred groomer so much that they would enjoy the session for nail clipping without causing any fuss.

  • More Convenient Solution

Professional groomers provide all essential services you may need for your pet. A usual service provides hair brushing, ear care, basic nail care, trimming, dental care, and bathing. With professional groomers taking care of your pets, you’ll be able to avoid the mess and stress associated with the task.

With some options like mobile pet grooming available, it’s more convenient these days. Mobile professional groomers visit either your house or some convenient central areas to groom your pets. You won’t even need to part with your pets for grooming services.

  • Equipped with the Right Grooming Supplies

Just like human beings, pets have different needs. For example, short-haired pets require different grooming supplies compared to long-haired pets. With the expertise and experience of professional groomers, they know what to use or the most appropriate grooming supplies to achieve results without experiencing any irritations. Experienced pet groomers also know the kind of haircut suited for a pet and the kind of hairbrush to use.

  • Ensures Safety

It can be challenging to groom your pets, especially if you’re new to owning one. Even if you’re an experienced pet owner, grooming sessions can be demanding and tiresome since most pets are aggressive when they’re being groomed. Take note that grooming under stress may even cause injury.

With professional groomers by your side, you don’t have to worry about anything because they’re trained to calm down and soothe pets. They’re also capable of creating the right environment for pets and grooming them.

  • Provides an Enjoyable Massage

Massaging pets can be hard, most particularly when you’re not aware of the muscle groups of the pets. Professional pet groomers can provide your pets a pleasurable and healthy massage that would relax them.

With pet massage, it provides a lot of health benefits such as reduced stress levels and stimulating your pet’s circulatory system.

  • Detects Parasites and Early Warning Signs of Illnesses

Another reason to hire professional groomers is that they have a thorough understanding of the dog’s anatomy. They can easily notice any abnormalities including bald patches, lumps, skin discoloration, rashes, bleeding, and gum discoloration. They can also detect the early signs of diseases.

Other than determining the early signs of illnesses, these professionals may tell if the pets have parasites. They do this by checking the pet’s coat for fleas, ear mites, and some parasites that might not be obviously visible to pet owners.

  • Provides Professional Hair Cuts

Does your pet need a haircut? If you don’t have any clue, professional pet groomers would know if pets need a haircut or not. They can determine whether a haircut is necessary with your pet’s current hair length. But, once pets need a haircut, you can always be assured that your pet will leave in style as professional groomers always strive to ensure that your pet will look their best.

How to Find the Best Professional Pet Groomer

Now that you know the reasons why you should hire a professional groomer for your pets, it’s time to find the best one who can provide you top notch pet care service.

One of the first things that you should take into consideration when looking for professional groomers is their certifications. You should ensure that they’re certified by the organizations for groomers. It’s also a good idea to know if the groomer goes to seminars, trade shows or any conventions to help their career.

Another thing to do when finding the right professional groomer is to research online. Several groomers have accounts on various social media platforms. Make sure to check them to know if you like their style and service. You may also read the reviews on Yelp or Google. Whether it’s bad or good, read any reviews you see online and weigh the pros and cons. In this way, you’ll be able to make a well-informed decision.

Conclusion

Professional groomers know how to do their job efficiently and effectively, making your furry friend healthy, beautiful, and happy. In addition to that, pet grooming experts have the capability to style up your pets looks and make them standout. Just make sure to hire the best one around your area to experience nothing but convenience.

All You Need to Keep a Pet of Your Choice Comfortably

Keeping a pet is probably a good idea since most people nowadays keep them. While having a pet is rewarding, keep in mind that keeping pets is a huge responsibility to the owner. People feel that owning a pet is a great way to improve your temperament and mood. If you think of owning a pet, then there are some essential things that you should consider.

Are You Able to Commit Yourself?

Before you acquire a pet, it is good to understand that owning it is a long-term commitment. For instance, if you keep a dog or a cat with a lifespan of 15 years, then be ready to commit to them throughout that period. Some pets require a lot of attention. If you cannot devote your time to your pet, consider getting a pet like fish since they are less time demanding. It is prudent to research and find out the amount of time and level of maintenance required for each type of pet before deciding on the one to take home.

Cost of Getting a Pet and Maintaining it

Before going for a pet, it is good to know your financial status. Owning a pet can be quite costly if you are not ready to meet all your needs. Some expenses, such as veterinary care and treatment, food, toys, and grooming, cannot be avoided at all if you own a pet. Unfortunately, the pet owners give up their animals because they cannot afford a pet’s cost. It is good to speak to other pet owners and know how they manage to keep them. Once you conclude that you need a pet, visit a pet market to choose from a variety.

Conditions with Other Family Members

Perhaps some family members could not be happy to stay with the pets in the same house since they could be even allergic to them and their fur, do not forget that family comes first, and hence you should consider every factor to avoid failing in your project. Then such animals are also not appropriate for your home. Some pets are not suitable for homes with infants and small children. Research is once again needed to choose a specific animal and breed for your family suitably.

Kind of Training Required for a Pet

You need to be honest with yourself if you can have the time required to train a pet. Pets need to be trained in some skills, such as obedience and behavioral training.

Usually, some pets require a lot of training, while others do not involve training. There are no terrible pets. Some pets are just abandoned because the owners failed to train them properly. It is essential to have a pet that you can train. Keeping a pet should not be on impulse. Doing adequate research on what is required to be a successful pet owner is right. Once you have prepared yourself for a lifelong commitment to the pet, you can get one from the pet market.

Tips to Take Care of Pets in Winters

Who doesn’t love pets? For sure, everybody does! After all, what’s better than waking up to a creature welcoming you in the most cheerful way? People are fond of keeping pets these days. Pets can change the whole mood of your house within seconds. Cats are one of the most kept pets, and if you are looking for a cat pouch hoodie for yourself to carry your cat easily anywhere, you can find it at organixpets.com/products/cat-pouch-hoodie.

Coming back to the perks of having pets, whether you had a bad work day or are stressed out due to workload, these amazing creatures can make you happy within seconds. Well, if you are already a pet keeper, you must be aware of the challenges that come along with it. It is a full-time duty because you have to take care of each and every aspect of your pet. Starting from their hygiene to their food, you have to make sure that everything is just fine and perfect to ensure that your pet stays healthy.

One of the most daunting tasks when it comes to keeping pets is taking care of them in winters. Winters are rough in most countries; therefore, you have to adjust your pet’s routine accordingly to keep it happy and active. Caring for your pet in the winter season is going to ask for a lot, so all you have to do is to stay content and dedicated because your pet’s health is important. It often happens that people pay almost no attention to caring for their pets in winters and later regret it when the pet catches a bad cold or, in the worst-case scenario, dies. It is always better to make your contribution to your pet’s life timely than to regret over spilt milk.

Below are some ways in which you can take care of your pets in winters.

Take Special Care of Paws

When taking your pets on a walk outside, always make sure that their paws are clear once you get them home. It often happens that as a result of walking on ice, salt gets stuck in between their paws. The stuck salt can cause cuts in their paws and rash on the skin. If not treated timely, bleeding may start, thus causing them extreme hurt, and this increases your work. Whenever your cat or dog comes from outside, take a minute out and dry their feet. You can use any random brush to clean the stuck salt and ensure that the feet are properly cleaned.

Prevent Slips

When taking your pet out on a walk in winters, refrain from walking on slippery surfaces. Some pets have weak joints, and they lose their grip on the ground easily. When going for a walk, always keep a mobile phone with you in case you want to call out someone for help. For dogs, you can get a harness for them and use them to steady their speed when they try to run.

Purchase Warm Clothing

Pets also need clothing. While you can also keep your pet warm inside the home, it’s better that you purchase warm clothing for them to take some extra care of. Warm clothing protects them from any extra cold outside and keeps them covered all the time. For kitties, if you are looking for warm clothing, you can get the best outfits for your cat at https://petpricelist.com/winter-is-coming-keep-your-kitty-safe-with-cat-clothing-and-other-items.

Adjust Calories and Food

Although you may already be feeding a healthy amount of calories to your dog, there are times of the year when these creatures burn more calories than the usual intake. For e.g., most of the pets love to play in the snow in winters, which means they burn more than the usual calories they normally do. You need to adjust the calorie intake according to your pet’s activity. Monitor your closely and look for any changes in its daily activities. Food also needs to be paid special attention to in winters. You can consult someone or Google yourself to find the foods that keep the inner temperature of your pet high so that it doesn’t get cold.

Keep an Eye on the Heat Sources

Pets usually seek warm places in the house in winter. It often happens that they sit too close to the heating sources that they ultimately get burnt. There is a high risk of an accident taking place, causing life-altering circumstances for you and your pet. Therefore, if you do have any heating sources in the house, block them when you aren’t around. Countless accidents have already happened in the past where pets have been accidentally burned. Therefore it’s always better to watch out for your pet to avoid such accidents.

5 Ways to Exercise with Your Pet

Your pooch happens to be one of the best training buddies that you can ever find for yourself. As they are always excited about fun-filled activities, they can be your ideal workout partner. Since these furballs require appropriate workout throughout the day, why not plan the entire schedule to enjoy the sessions with them?

Yes, one of the ways to stay fit would be by working out with your pets. Such workout sessions would be exciting both for you and the pups. And to add to that, they would love to try out new activities as it gives them the opportunities to spend time with you. Therefore, here are a few of the ways to exercise with your pets and have fun at the same time:

  1. Regular Walking Is A Must

Do you want to know the weight loss mantra of the influencers trending on the digital platform? Healthy eating and going out on regular walks are the secrets to a fit and healthy body. And, it isn’t only meant for you but your pooches as well.

Dogs need to go on walks either during the day or night with their masters for exercises and mental stimulation. In case you want to start exercising with your dog, one of the best ways to do it would be walking. The length and intensity of walking depend on your pet’s age, breed type, and fitness. Regular walking helps them stay away from unwanted obesity, heart and liver diseases, and osteoarthritis, which is very common in senior pets.

Pro Tip: While planning such sessions, make sure to reward the dog after each little break. You can also try playing with some dog toys and reinforcing good behaviors with some treats or physical gestures. Also, do carry water with you as your little pup would require proper hydration from time to time.

  1. Try Out Reverse Lunges

Many dogs often take up sedentary lifestyle habits after their masters. And, if you become a couch potato and start putting up weight, you would be surprised to see how such lifestyle choices affect your pup. Therefore, many people love to try out different exercises to stay fit and keep their dogs healthy. One of the most common ones is the reverse lunges, which has proven to be quite useful in controlling many dogs’ weight issues.

You need to stand facing your pets, and the pet should remain seated in front of you. Start performing a reverse lunge, and at the bottom of each one, shake the paw. Try repetitions after twenty on each side. You can change the intervals as per your strength and choices.

Pro Tip: Start slowly with your dogs as these sessions can be confusing for them. Also, keep rewarding the little furballs and motivate them to perform with you. Get some treats as well to increase their concentration and help them to follow your instructions correctly.

You can check out GoHealthUp for more exercising tips.

  1. Swim With Your Little Fur-Friend

Another common activity that you can do with your dog, which is quite a good workout option, is swimming. Furthermore, it is the best exercise for your dog as it has little impact on the bones, which involves a lot of muscle workout.

To spice things up a little more, you can play fetch with balls right inside the pool. Your dog would love to bond over such activities as most of the pets love water. Also, they are termed to be natural swimmers for a reason. You get to stay fit and healthy while you enjoy fun sessions with your pet without any troubles.

Pro Tip: No matter how experienced you or your dog are, keeping a life jacket handy is essential. Also, take little breaks in between, especially when your little pup is starting swimming for the first time. Along with these, try consulting a doctor to prevent any stomach infections due to pool or ocean water.

  1. Get Into Agility Training

If you and your dog need to shed a lot of weight, you might consider going for the agility training sessions. In such courses, the dogs get to go through sessions involving jumping through tires, navigating see-saws, weaving around poles, and even darting inside some tunnels.

And as the handler, you also need to go through almost similar pathways to keep track of the pooch. As a result, you get to do many excessive workout sessions that can burn some extra calories. And to add to that, your dog gets trained quite well during such sessions.

Pro Tip: Again, make sure to reward the dog whenever possible. In case you cannot provide the treats, use gestures, and patting to let them understand how well they are performing in each session. Also, make sure to consult a certified professional for such exercises depending on the dog’s age and mobility.

  1. Don’t Spare The Brain

Exercise should never get restricted to the body only. In the case of dogs, they need mental exercises too. As a result, make sure to get into some activities that can help them exercise their brains. Remember that dogs need mental stimulation throughout the day, just like physical ones. Use specific games and activities to teach them obedience and other good behaviors while enjoying the sessions with you.

Pro Tip: Do not be too strict with the pets as they fail to follow the commands if they get too complicated for them. So, consult a specialist before you start such sessions to understand your pet’s requirements properly.

Final Words

These are some of the workout activities that you can try doing with your pet. You can modify all these sessions as per the requirements and convenience of your pet. Also, make sure to know more about your pet’s energy level and health condition before resorting to any hardcore workout session with them. In many cases, the pups can get enthusiastic about these sessions but end up hurting their internal organs. In older dogs, it is a significant issue as they fail to understand their capabilities. You never want them to get hurt while enjoying such fun-filled activities with you. So, try consulting a vet before you start such sessions with them.

What Causes Joint Pain In Your Dog And How To Help Relieve It

Especially in older dogs, joint pain is a common ailment that, unfortunately, many dogs will experience at some point in their lives. While larger dogs have been historically more prone to these joint issues tan smaller breeds, that doesn’t mean small dogs can’t also be affected.

As a dog owner, it’s important to know what can cause joint pain in dogs, how to spot it, and, finally, how to help relieve it.

Causes Of Joint Pain

While joint pain is often caused by simple factors, like wear and tear or old age, there are times when there might be something much bigger going on.

Here are a few different causes of joint pain in dogs:

  1. Arthritis

Arthritis is one of the most common diseases a dog can develop as they get older. As they age, their cartilage thins out, and, therefore, their bones begin to rub against each other, without any kind of lubrication to protect them. This leads not only to damaged cartilage, but also inflamed joints that become difficult or painful to move.

  1. Hip Dysplasia

When hip dysplasia isn’t treated correctly, it can actually lead to arthritis. Hip dysplasia is seen more often in larger dogs and happens when a dog’s femur bone and pelvis socket don’t grow at equal rates, creating stress and wear and tear on the hip from an early age.

Dysplasia can occur in knees or elbows as well. Smaller dogs, for example, are more prone to knee dysplasia, while elbow dysplasia is common in larger dogs, like golden retrievers and rottweilers.

  1. Being Overweight

If a dog becomes overweight, the added weight and strain on their joints can lead to increased joint pain. Beyond that, fat tissue can produce chemicals that actually increase inflammation and cause more discomfort to your dog’s joints.

When a dog is overweight, their risk of developing arthritis doubles or triples, and they also run the risk of rupturing their cruciate ligaments. For these reasons, it’s important to keep your dog’s weight in check and ensure they’re getting enough exercise.

  1. Overuse

Overuse of a dog’s joints is an example of a degenerative problem, or one that develops over time. It’s tougher to keep a dog from experiencing joint pain due to overuse, especially when they’re full of energy and life as younger dogs. For this reason, many older dogs do face joint pain due to overuse in their younger years.

  1. Injury

Like humans, dogs can suffer from joint pain due to injury from running, jumping, or playing too rough.

Symptoms Of Joint Pain

Some symptoms of joint pain to look out for in your dog include:

  • Difficulty lying down, sitting, or standing
  • Slow or stiff in movements
  • Inability to climb stairs
  • Not jumping or running as much as usual
  • Lessened activity or interest
  • Limping or keeping any limb off the ground
  • Swelling or stiffness in joints

All of these signs are a hint that you should take your dog to the vet and check treatment options for joint pain.

Treating Joint Pain

There are many different options for treating joint pain in dogs, all of which will change on a case-by-case basis. Here are some common treatments:

  • Joint Supplements

There are many types of dog joint supplement available in the market today. Whether your dog suffers from arthritis, hip dysplasia, or joint pain in general, there’s a supplement that can help them. Some examples of the best supplements for 2020 include:

  • Anxious Pet Organic Hemp Oils
  • PetNC Natural Care Hip and Joint Soft Chews
  • Solimo Dog Hip and Joint Chewable Tablets
  • StrellaLab Hemp Treats and Glucosamine
  • Zesty Paws Senior Advanced Glucosamine for Dogs

Each supplement is aimed to treat joint pain differently, so before choosing one, you must figure out what the cause of your dog’s joint pain is and ask a vet for the best option for pain relief.

  • Orthopedic Dog Beds

Another great way to relieve joint pain, specifically arthritis pain, is to purchase an orthopedic dog bed. Similar to humans, dogs require a good night sleep not only for energy, but also for relief from the joint pain they may be experiencing.

Some great orthopedic dog bed choices include:

  • BarksBar Orthopedic Dog Bed – can be found on Amazon for around USD$72 and offers both a cotton pad, as well as an orthotic foam support
  • Big Barker 7in Pillow Top Orthopedic Dog Bed – can also be found on Amazon, but, as a higher end bed, is around USD$240.
  • Friends Forever Othropedic Dog Bed – runs around USD$44 on Amazon and is great for smaller dogs.

Orthopedic dog beds are great for joints because the memory-foam-like material serves to not only support aching joints, but also relieve pressure and pain from areas that are often sore.

  • Weight Management

Since overweight dogs often face joint issues due to the added weight and pressure on their joints, simply lowering their weight through diet restrictions and exercise can make a huge difference in how your dog’s joints feel.

  • Rehabilitation

Surprisingly, dogs can benefit from rehabilitation and sports medicine, just as humans do. Rehabilitation in dogs can include different kinds of exercises that aim to build muscle, as well as increase flexibility. This can be done through:

  • Hydrotherapy (or underwater treadmills)
  • Laser therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Balance balls
  • Massages

All of these techniques serve to strengthen muscles and increase flexibility in order to lessen the strain and pain on your dog’s joints.

  • Surgery

While surgical treatment is often a last resort as it’s not only expensive, but also evasive, there are times when certain kinds of surgeries are necessary, including:

  • Arthroscopic joint cleaning
  • Replacement of tissue
  • Entire joint replacement

Conclusion

While your dog may have been diagnosed with joint pain, that doesn’t mean they can’t find their way back to a fun and active lifestyle with small changes, like diet, supplements, or a simple investment in a dog bed.

Different situations, causes, and even breeds will result in different options for joint pain relief. For that reason, if your dog is displaying symptoms of joint issues, consult your vet as soon as possible so you can go over the different options available to your pet.

What Happens If You Overfeed Your Fish?

Many children have fish as their first pet because it’s often thought they’re easy to take care of as they’re low-maintenance and don’t have too many needs. While this may be the case to an extent, there are still aspects of fish care that you must play close attention to, such as their food, as you don’t want to over or underfeed your pet fish.

Why Fish Are Often Overfed

Overfeeding fish can be a very easy thing to do because people forget just how small they are. Plus, with fish, one of the only ways to interact with them is through food. Not only does this mean people want to feed them more often, but the fish also begin to associate their appearance with the promise of food, which makes them appear hungry more often than they really are. Because of this, many fish owners don’t know how much or often to feed their fish, which can cause dangerous overfeeding.

Here are some of the problems related to overfeeding fish:

  • Higher Ammonia And Nitrate levels

Both uneaten fish food and fish waste have protein in them that when broken down, turn into ammonia and nitrites that become extremely toxic to fish when there’s either too much of them, or they’re not cleaned out quickly and efficiently.

  • Lower Oxygen Levels

Again, uneaten fish food as well as fish waste can decay in what’s called an aerobic process. An aerobic process is one that uses up oxygen and produces carbon dioxide in its place. When this happens, less oxygen is dissolved in the tank for fish to use.

  • Altered pH levels

The breakdown of organic material, just as it lowers oxygen levels, can also alter the water’s pH level, which is an important factor to consider when keeping your fish tank’s water chemistry balanced. Different species of fish require different pH levels; thus, make sure to have an optimal pH range that you’ll want your water to fall into in order to keep your fish healthy.

One effective tip for caring for pet fish is to be aware of your tank’s pH. Most fish species require a neutral pH, ranging between 6.5 and 9, however you’ll want to check each species’ requirements before introducing them to your tank.

  • Fin Rot

Fin rot is really caused by stress, but overfeeding can be a major cause of stress in fish.

  • Algae Bloom

Algae bloom is commonly seen in both ponds and tanks. It’s a kind of algae that multiplies when there are large quantities of organic material, nitrates, and phosphates in the water.

  • Mold

Too much food and, therefore, too much organic material, in the water can cause mold to grow on the gravel, plants, or other décor in either your tank or pond. This mold or fungus not only makes the tank dirtier, but can also be unhealthy to your fish.

How To Avoided Overfeeding

Now that you know the negative effects overfeeding can cause your fish, how to avoid overfeeding should now be addressed. There are many different techniques that can be used in order to control your fish feeding and ensure you aren’t falling into the category of overfeeding. These techniques include:

  • Using An Automatic Feeder

One simple way to do this is to invest in an automatic fish feeder, like the ones found on FishLab.com. An automatic fish feeder uses electronics to feed your fish daily, whether or not you’re there. This comes with a timer that allows you to program when your fish must be fed. All you have to do is remember to refill it when it gets empty.

There are two main styles of fish feeders: rotating barrel and portion control. With barrel fish feeders, all you have to do is fill the barrel, and, then, it will rotate and drop a small amount of food into the tank as necessary. On the one hand, the portion control feeder is similar to a pill box—you fill pre-separated slots with the appropriate amounts of food, set the timer, and one portion will be released into the tank at the set time.

  • Feeding On A Schedule

Automatic feeders will help prevent you from overfeeding your fish, but you’ll need to know what kind of schedule to set those feeders to. Most tanks will thrive if they’re fed twice a day. It’s better to have more frequent, but smaller feedings instead of larger portions of food less often.

  • Feeding The Right Amount

Again, feeding the correct amount will be easier when using a feeder, but, first, you must determine how much you’re supposed to be feeding your fish. The best way to determine this is to watch your fish as they eat by feeding a small amount, paying attention to how quickly it’s eaten, and, then, add a little bit more at a time.

As a general rule of thumb, anything your fish can eat within four to five minutes is how much they should be fed. Anything that exceeds that is, most likely, not going to be eaten and will contribute to an unhealthy tank.

  • Removing Excess Food

While it’s best to avoid putting too much food in your tank in the first place, there are going to be times when there’ll be an excess of food in the tank for various reasons. When this happens, a good practice is to go in yourself and remove any food that hasn’t been eaten. Not only will this keep your fish from eating simply out of boredom, but it will also prevent the food from sticking to the bottom of the tank and causing mold, fungus, or other problems on your tank’s water health.

Conclusion

As with any pet, overfeeding can lead to a slew of problems that could, eventually, lead to death. In fish, especially, being smaller and perceived as low-maintenance, it can be easy to fall into the trap of overfeeding. However, knowing the negative effects this can cause and, then, learning how to avoid those can be highly beneficial not only to the health of your tank and its inhabitants, but the overall happiness and wellbeing of your fish as well.

How to make a pet barrier for a car? Easy step-by-step DIY

When you travel by your dog in the car, keeping them secure in the trunk area or back seat helps you concentrate on driving. If you own a minivan, station wagon, SUV, or crossover vehicle, you can build a barrier on your own to place it between the trunk space and rearmost seating area where you keep your furry friend. With very little materials from hardware and department stores, and a little assembly and sawing, you’ll soon have a reliable barrier to help keep your dog out of your way when you are driving.

1. Finding the Right Materials for Pet Barrier

Measure the interior of your vehicle:

The size of your pet barrier will depend on the wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling lengths of your vehicle’s trunk area. If your car has convertible back seats, you got the choice of placing the pet barrier just behind the front seats. Measure the area just behind the front seats up to your vehicle’s ceiling and measure the trunk area’s ceiling-to-floor height behind the back seats. In the end, measure the side windows in the trunk area. It is the longest measurement of all, and then write down these lengths.

If you have a luxury sedan or any other vehicle without open trunk space behind the back seats and you don’t mind keeping your dog in the back seat, you may put the barrier just behind the front seats.

Buy rods which provide spring-tension:

These spring-tension rods are used either to support shower curtains or to hang draperies in windows. Their spring action allows them to be adjusted without screws or adhesives between two surfaces. Then you need rods that can compress to just a slightly shorter than the ceiling-to-floor length of the vehicle’s trunk that you measured earlier. Bring this measurement to the hardware or department store, and ask any worker there to help you find the proper size.

  • For example, if the ceiling-to-floor length is 3 feet, 8 inches (1.1176 meters), buy rods that compress to at least 3 feet, 7 1/2 inches (1.143 meters).
  • You can find these rods at large hardware stores or department stores.
  • Select rods that have additional tapered stoppers (made of rubber) on their ends. These will help to keep the barrier in place firmly against the ceiling and floor surfaces.

Select crossbar material:

For the horizontal bars, look for 3/4 or 1 inch (at least 1.9-2.54 centimeters) wooden rods or PVC pipe at the hardware/departmental store. Both of them be strong enough to keep the dog from getting through. PVC bars are lighter but also easier for your canine companion to chew through.

Calculate the total length of the crossbar:

These must be at least as wide as the wall-to-wall measurements of your vehicle’s trunk area. Calculate the total rod length and purchase according to your dog’s size or purchase some more in case of any tragedy if you break the rod while making it.

If your dog weighs more than 28 pounds (12.7006 kilograms), multiply your wall-to-wall length by four for four crossbars. If the dog weighs less than 28 pounds, multiply by 5 for 5 bars. Finally, multiply this figure by 0.8 or 4/5, and write down the result.

For example: If your longest measurement, i.e., wall-to-wall measurement, is four feet (1.22 meters) for a 44-pound (19.9581 kilograms)dog, then multiplying it by four times gives 16 feet (4.9 meters). Then multiplying this figure by 0.8 or 4/5 gives 12 feet 8 inches (3.90144 meters).

Buy less material for some SUVs:

In some minivans and SACs /SUVs without convertible rear seats, you can’t find any gap to barricade between the rearmost seats. Or some dog owners with SUVs prefer not to convert the rear seats. In both cases, get enough material to fill the gap between the top of the rearmost seats and the vehicle ceiling. Three bars should be sufficient. Multiply the longest length in the gap (wall-to-wall) present above the rear seats by 3, then multiply the result by 0.8.

2. How to install a pet barrier in a car easily

Measure the crossbars:

Crossbars’ length will vary according to the vehicle’s gap they will cover. If you’re using four bars, then the underneath two rods must be long enough to cover the gap between both fronts seats and just above the center console.

  • Measure these rods at 2/5 of your wall-to-wall measurements, or long enough to cover this gap. Measure the top two bars at 4/5 of the wall-to-wall length or long enough to span the gaps between the side windows, headrests, and the front seat.
  • If you are using five bars, measure the bottom two bars at 2/5, the wall-to-wall length, the middle bar at 3/5, and the top two bars at 4/5. Always make sure these lengths must cover the gaps. If not, change the length and fill the gaps.
  • If you’re only using three bars for a barrier behind the rear seats without a gap between the rear seats and trunk, measure the top bar at 7/10 (which is the longest length), the middle bar at 4/5 the bottom bar 9/10. Ensure these lengths, whether they cover the gaps or not.

Cut the crossbars:

Using a hand saw, or table saw, cut the four or five crossbars to their corresponding lengths. Use a medium to high-grade sandpaper to sand off the sharp, ragged edges of the wooden rods or PVC pipes.

Vertical Rod’s Position:

Put the two rods vertically with spring-tension, just behind both front seats, or put the rods behind the rear seats. Their space from each wall should usually be about 1/5 of the wall-to-wall measurement. Make sure they are perfectly straight/vertical, not bending to one side or the other.

Mark all the attachment points:

  • Position your 4 or 5 crossbars horizontally and equally spaced from one another. Place them one after the other.
  • The two smaller bars are three inches (7.6112 cm) higher than the center console. The bar present at the top must be four inches (10.159 cm) below the ceiling.
  • A very thin fine line marker indicates the attachment points by putting a cross(x)-mark on the wooden or horizontal PVC rods. They intersect with the vertical rods, keeping the horizontal rods in place, horizontal marks on the vertical rods above and below where they cross with the horizontal bars.

Assemble the pet barrier:

Using 22-gauge utility wire, bind the vertical bars to the crossbars at their marked intersection points. Run the wire in a cross(X)-shaped pattern diagonally around the intersection, changing your winding orientation after every two passes. Wrap the wire firmly until the two bars are strongly secured. Check that the bars remain vertical to each other throughout the whole winding.

If you’d prefer to hide the wire, wrap it with an electrical tape of your desired color. People usually use that color, which matches the bars’ color.

Put the barrier in the vehicle:

Ensure the bar’s attachment at the intersection points. Check again to reduce errors. Position the barrier directly behind the back or front seats, dividing the trunk and rearmost seating area. Use the vertical rods’ spring-tension feature, compress them enough to allow the barrier to be slid into place and secured.

Can CBD Help Dogs Fight Cancer?

Cancer, regardless if it’s experienced by your pet or humans, is always a difficult condition to manage. If your dog is fighting this chronic disease, for instance, the pain and complications can take a toll on you. Depending on the kind of cancer that your dog is fighting and its progression, a veterinary oncologist can recommend several treatment options. The common treatment that’s given to ailing dogs are chemotherapy to shrink tumors, surgery to remove them, and auxiliary medicines to reduce treatment effects.

Unlike normal cells that die once they age or get damaged, cancer cells don’t die on their own. Instead, they grow, mutate, and divide to form tumors. For decades, cannabidiol (CBD) has allegedly helped with pain relief and boosting heart, skin, and eye health. It has also been associated with the prevention and treatment of cancer in dogs.

In human beings, CBD has been linked with reduced brain tumors. It may kill cancer cells and slow down, or even stop, the growth of tumors. The supposed ability of CBD to kill cancer cells makes it an ideal treatment for controlling the spread of cancer. If this is scientifically established, CBD can be one of the natural supplements that vets will recommend to pet owners whose dogs are fighting cancer.

Studies show that when included in an approved veterinarian treatment plan, CBD oil products may help dogs that have cancer in different ways, including the following:

  1. Reducing Inflammation And Pain

As your dog undergoes treatment and the cancer progresses, it’ll most certainly experience pain and inflammation. Managing the pain is a huge part of cancer treatment for dogs. However, most pain management medications have negative side effects on dogs. Opioid medicines, for instance, pose a high-tolerance risk and potential overdose.

On the other hand, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been subjects of scrutiny due to the severe side effects they have in some dogs. The side effects include kidney and liver failure, gastrointestinal (GI) problems, and, in extreme cases, death. Severe side effects pose more threat to senior dogs whose immunity is highly compromised.

Giving your dog CBD may help reduce inflammation and pain. CBD may also enhance the efficacy of other pain medications. This means that your vet can prescribe lesser amounts of such medications without affecting the comfort of your dog. Even more importantly, compared to other pain management medications that veterinarians prescribe, CBD has a stronger safety profile for dogs as reflected by fewer side effects.

  1. Enhancing the Effectiveness of Anti-Tumor Drugs

CBD may have the ability to support the reduction of tumor size in dogs. In humans, CBD may have anti-tumor effects on different cancers, including leukemia, lung, breast, colon, brain, and spine cancers. Studies show that besides having tumor-shrinking properties, CBD may also enhance the effectiveness of radiation therapy to shrink tumors and possibly reduce its dosing, without decreasing its efficacy. This reduces the severe side effects of radiation therapy that can be harmful to dogs.

As more study findings on cancers emerge, it’s becoming evident that the endocannabinoid system in dogs is related to cancer. This means that parts of their complicated signaling process, which is controlled by the peripheral and central nervous system, are capable of responding to cannabinoids, like CBD.

  1. Enhances Appetite And Reduces Nausea

As their furry friend goes through cancer treatment, two major side effects that dog owners have to deal with are persistent nausea and a reduced appetite. Combined, these side effects can result in anorexia. Other than this, the dog may develop a metabolic disorder known as cachexia as a result of cancer. The disorder is capable of causing severe appetite losses and is associated with at least 20% of deaths among dogs that are fighting cancer.

The gut is filled with endocannabinoid enzymes, receptors, and transmitters. These systems play a key role in maintaining the right environment for good gut and brain-gut performance. These two elements are responsible for regulating various autonomic systems in the body.

Since endocannabinoid plays a major role in regulating metabolism and enhancing general gut health, adding CBD to your dog’s diet goes a long way in improving its nausea and appetite. In fact, it’s one of the key reasons that oncologists may integrate it into treatment plans for dogs that are fighting cancer.

  1. Improving Immunity

The immune system and the endocannabinoid system are closely related. The relationship between the two systems is extremely strong that it has been dubbed the immune cannabinoid system.

Due to its ability to decrease oxidative stress, which refers to a process that’s associated with the ability of the body to fight the pathogens that invade it without attacking or destroying healthy tissue, CBD improves the immunity of dogs that are fighting cancer. Further, may help in regulating gut functionality, which is an aspect that has been associated with a strong immune system.

  1. Improving The Ability To Sleep

While the endocannabinoid system is known to play an important role in moderating sleep, it’s still not clear how exactly cannabinoid plays this role. Even so, the two prevalent cannabinoids in cannabis–THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD–tend to have a positive effect when it comes to the quality of sleep.

The CBD compound serves as the waking agent, while THC serves as the sleep agent. These aspects may seem like they wouldn’t keep your dog from suffering and allow them to sleep better at night. However, by making their waking time better during the day, CBD enables your dog to experience better sleep at night.

Final Thoughts

Cancer is a chronic ailment that takes a toll on dogs due to the inflammation associated with it. As your dog struggles with cancer, you can use CBD to manage its negative effects, such as pain, nausea, loss of appetite, reduced immunity, and the discomfort that comes with ailment and the treatment that’s administered to the dog.

Other than managing these effects, CBD may have the ability to kill cancer cells, slows down the rate that the disease spreads, and may even stop the growth of cancerous tumors.

Don’t make these six silly pet owners’ mistakes

“A man’s perfect companion never has fewer than four feet!” is a universal truth which no one can deny. Having a canine companion can be one of the best life experiences if the owner knows how to be a good pet parent in the first place. You have to understand that the pet isn’t just a recreational object you brought home for “fun” and that being responsible while looking after your furr-iend is of utmost importance.

While getting home a beloved pet, you should take care of a few basic affairs in order to give your newest family member a happy and fulfilling life. It is your responsibility to get the best of everything the pet requires. Pets are considered amongst the most precious possessions, so getting insurance for your pet which covers the medical care it needs should seem as important as getting your diamond necklace insured. You can easily check pet insurance cost on the internet and choose the deal which suits you best. While a lot of new pet owners end up making few mistakes while raising their pets due to lack of knowledge, it is understandable that the mistakes were unintentional. Here’s a list of silly mistakes you should avoid if you’re about to get home a pawed member:

  1. Visiting the vet only when your pet is having an ailment – You need to understand that your dog or cat cannot talk, hence it will not be able to tell you if it feels under the weather one fine morning. Just like us, pets too need regular check-ups. Only visiting the vet when your pet is ill can cause a lot of health related troubles. Always remember, prevention is better than cure.
  1. Feeding the pet more than it can digest – We understand that you love your pet, but that doesn’t mean you’ll cause trouble to its health! A lot of time, pet owners don’t know where to draw the line and over-feed the pet out of “love”. A responsible pet owner should not be tempted by the idea of treats every now and then, just like the pet. Maintaining a healthy diet is important because you don’t want your pet to suffer from obesity and other health issues.
  1. Neglecting vaccination and ligation – Vaccines play the key role in ensuring a long pet life. Pet owners often underestimate the requirement of vaccination and that only ends up reducing the lifespan of the pet. They are prone to various bacteria, viruses, etc and vaccines help prevent them from contracting such disease causing germs. Similarly, neutering the pet is also important because it reduces the chance of genital cancer. If you don’t want to become a pet grandparent, get your pawed buddy neutered ASAP!
  1. Not going out on walks – It isn’t only you who needs to be in good shape, your pet needs it too. Not taking out your pet for regular walks only end up causing a lot of health problems. The pet becomes fat, the hind-legs get affected, and it gradually becomes difficult for the pet to even move around in the house if it doesn’t go on regular walks. Further, it also leads to mood swings and bad temper because staying indoor all day long can make the pet feel claustrophobic.
  1. Not having a set of rules – Who doesn’t love a well-behaved pet? Someone who won’t shout at guests, someone who would know where to pee, someone who would not go around tearing all the slippers around the house! Having a set of rules and training/disciplining your dog in a home environment is as easy as it sounds. No, you won’t need a professional trainer for this. Since domestic pets are fast learners, they can easily pick up the set of rules if you are patient enough to train them by luring them with small treats. It will not only help you earn a good reputation as a pet parent, your house will also seem welcoming and friendly to visitors.
  1. Neglecting pet-proof housing – A household preparing for a new pet should also know how to make the pet feel safe in it. Forgetting to pet-proof the house before getting a tailed member can wreak havoc. Many first time pet owners forget to take precautionary steps like keeping small, easily swallowed objects out of reach, having a proper lock in the front door, removing objects like shoe-polish, detergents, etc. from easily accessible places. Neglecting the process of pet-proofing can lead to poisoning, choking, etc. and even destruction of household items.

These are few of the most common mistakes made by pet owners, causing a lot of health issues to the pet and you definitely don’t want to commit one. In the end, a pet owner should always remember what will be best for the pet and give them a happy and wholesome life.
